The end of the month seemed to stalk her as it moved closer each day, and bills would soon be due again. Nire had not, in fact, gone home on time the next day, or the next… all the way up to the end of the week. She needed those extra tips.
Tonight she had to sort through the bills and figure out which ones she could actually afford to pay. The electric and utilities bills had to be paid first… no wait, the car payment had to be made first, then the utilities and electric. Then she needed to put aside a little money for groceries, and rent wasn’t due until the ninth.
Chances were the medical bills would ju

The Seeds of Destruction: Chapter 1
She wasn’t crazy. She knew she wasn’t. Well at least, most of the time she did. Then there were moments like this when she wondered, which is what spurred her to repeat that reassurance in her head. She wasn’t crazy.
The roads were a bit icy today, so the troubled girl drove with caution down the busy city street. It was 7:30, she had worked late again. Her stomach growled, reminding her that all she’d had for lunch was a small homemade ham sandwich and a tea… and that had been nearly 6 hours ago. She considered stopping for fast food on the way home, but quickly changed her mind when she remembered

The Depth of Shadow - Chapter 3
As the cool morning light bathed Eastcastle in its hazy blue glow, the residents slowly woke, and the staff rushed throughout the castle executing the morning chores. There were fireplaces to be lit, breakfasts to be served, and a small human girl sitting quite alone, wondering what to do.
The bedroom door knocked, and two women entered. Nire did not recognize either of them. They were both older human women, and one of them carried a tray. "Hello Miss. Nire," the older woman said in a strange accent. "My name is Elra and this is Jinny, Margery asked us to attend to you this morning."
"Where's Marge?&q

“Not one word,” Lucian instructed Alastor as they passed through the gates of Eastcastle, the child still situated directly in front of him.
“I still don’t see what was wrong with the orphanage here, it seemed perfectly fine to me.”
“I said, not… one… word.” The other fell silent, but a smirk formed on his lips.
The staff of Eastcastle greeted the incoming company, and more than a few heads were turned at the small human child that sat atop the large black rathe just in front of their High Lord. A young woman with silver hair, wearing a gray and white house maids unif

The Depth of Shadow - chapter 1
Dust filled the air in the hot midday sun, and the only sound was that of hoof beats and heavy footsteps. The scent of the newly disturbed dirt filled the dry air, but the odd hint of something burning lingered subtly amongst the smells of heat and dust. The company of demons had been growing weary of their journey, but none quite so much as the large, blue-gray demon at the head of the campaign, whose golden eyes glimmered in the heat as his black mount trudged heavy hoofed across the cracked, arid ground.
The sky was cloudless and bright, yet the hazy atmosphere made it difficult to see too far into the distance. The smell grew

The darkness seemed to churn as she sat up in bed. Her long brown hair fell on her shoulders as she stared blankly into the corners of her room. It was odd, she thought, that she would be having these dreams again all of a sudden. It had been years since she could last remember having them.
She looked at her alarm clock. The green numbers flashed 3:00. Always between midnight and three… she thought to herself. Yesterday was her 19th birthday, and she had felt strange when she had gone to bed. Thinking back to when she was younger she could recall the dreams seeming almost real. When she was very young she swore they weren&r

The Lord of Shadows - Chapter 16 (revised)
As the chaos in Eastcastle had Lucian frantically trying to find Nire, he could tell that Azael was growing as a threat the longer he was away. Pushing his way through the halls as residents ran to find safer areas, he suddenly felt a presence deep within himself. Nire… he thought as the living darkness of the depths surrounded her small frame.
Suddenly aware of what had happened, Lucian darted towards a shadow as it lengthened along the wall. The sun was nearing the horizon and he would soon have the advantage of darkness.
A large portion of the Southern army forced its way through the gates and rampaged through the city.
