thanks :)

ha, actually i do what they tell you not to do and i mix brands. I have Danielle Smith (which are FABULOUS) Holbien, Grumbacher, cotman, and MaiMeriBlu. my danielle smiths are by far the best - cotman is perfectly good and reasonably priced. grumbacher has a tendency to add too much medium to some colors which is irritating - they seem to be highly inconsistent with the amount of medium in the paints - that being said i buy very specific colors from them only. holbien is also just a good, basic watercolor. MaiMeriBlue is decent, i have nothing particularly bad to say about the colors except for the packaging. the labels peel off easily, and the color printed on the label is NOT reflective of how it looks in the tube. other than that, they are nice colors.

I grow attached to a certain brands color, so i have a mixture of brands specifically for the way that they mix a particular color. for instance i use cotman colbalt blue, and grumbacher indigo, holbien japanese watercolor rose, etc etc...

Thank you for your advices! :) I don't have much money to spend so I'm trying to completely use up my current watercolors before buying new but now I'm starting to think that it's no use..

yeah, its really a collection you build over time. id start with the basics, the best ones to start with are Cadmium red medium, alizerin crimson, colbalt blue, cadmium yellow medium, burnt umber, and ivory black. if you want to get some secondaries i suggest a ultramarine violet and a sap green.

with cadmium red, cadmium yellow, colbalt blue, ivory black and burnt umber, you can mix most other others.

then when you get some extra cash go buy another color or two.

The owl is cute - although he almost looks like he's laughing at her, somehow! And she doesn't look very happy about it...

This is beautiful though, I really like the swampy colours :)
