Alwyn with the Smoking Flame by LiquidFaeStudios Alwyn with the Smoking Flame by LiquidFaeStudios
YAY! Done for :iconwhispersss: "Masters in Fantasy" contest
[link]

this was SOOOO fun to do! lol. Fantasy rendition of Georges de la Tours' "Magdalen with the Smoking Flame"

After studying the image for quite some time I decided she was staring at an oil burner of sorts, and not a candle (because of the black horizontal line that seems to be a wick holder hovering inside the glass container) and I decided to keep the oil burner and fancy it up a bit.

Done in watercolors (very difficult!) with minor touch ups in photoshop (mainly fixing highlights and enhancing contrast and darkness) cuz frankly, you just cant get that dark with watercolors and the fact that the scanner uses light which reflects on the paper it makes the nice darks i had, lighter. boo. yay for the burn brush. I did a copy of this painting in school and have always loved it, so I jumped at the idea of being able to recreate it as a fantasy painting. Im not sure what kind of animal skull that is... it seems to resemble a big cats skull but I imagine is is some strange beast (that resembles a big cat?)

Oh, very nice! It's always good to do a masters reproduction every once in a while. I love your take on it, the wings peeking out of the darkness especially.

yay! those wings were a really flashy touch I thought, that brought the whole thing even farther into the fantasy realm. I wondered how noticeable they were at first sight ;)
